ABSTRACT:
Hydrogels are more advantageous owing to their favorable physical properties as compared to the traditional dosage forms which enhances the delivery of antifungal drug into the skin. Therefore, the current study aims at overcoming the solubility challenges posed by a hydrophobic antifungal drug, clotrimazole by embedding it into a hydrogel matrix. The objective of the current study was to come up with a pregelled hydrogel having 1% w/w clotrimazole through the use of water-soluble co-solvents such as glycerin and polyethylene glycol. Carbomer was the gelling agent used in varying concentrations. The stability, drug release, spreadability, pH, viscosity and drug content of the formulations were studied. A spectrophotometer methodology was employed to analyze the clotrimazole present in the formulations. It was found that the drug release was highest in the F4 formulation that has 0.4g of carbomer thereby making it the optimized formulation.
