Formulation and Evaluation of Herbal Scrub using Fenugreek, Coffee, Honey and Others - A Review

ABSTRACT:

Most of the marketed products when applied on the skin which causes dryness of skin after its long-term use which results less life of skin problems of acne and redness. Solution for this problem is use of scrub which include all herbal ingredients and increases cleansing, softening, moisturizing, fairness of skin. The use of natural ingredients to fight against acne, wrinkle and also to control secretion of oil is known as natural or herbal cosmetics. Herbal cosmeceuticals usually contain the plant parts which possess antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-aging properties. Herbal cosmetics are the safest product to use in daily routine with no side effects and cosmaceuticals are the product which influences the function of skin.

INTRODUCTION:

Herbal Cosmetics, here referred as the makeup which are prepared utilizing plant products having cosmetic actions. Recently the utilize of botanicals in beauty care products have expanded primarily due to the mild action and non- toxic nature. In cosmetics, both natural and Phyto-ingredients are utilized. Natural products Include oils, extracts, secretions etc. Phyto-ingredients include unadulterated constituents obtained by different process.2

 

Facial scrub is a cosmetic or a beauty product or a treatment which cleanses and exfoliates the skin of the face or body. Facial scrubs are beneficial to remove dirt, skin cells and sebum or oil, blackheads and Whiteheads. It helps to maintain skin appearance.11

 

Body scrub ingredients can be made from synthetic and natural ingredients. On regular use of scrubs ,skin become glowing, smooth, soft and healthy because dead cells of skin are removed and exposing new skin cell.1

 

There are three kinds of skin types, oily skin, sensitive skin and dry skin. For a person with dry skin must use the facial scrub, which contains the moisturizing and hydrating ingredients. If the person is having sensitive skin, he or she should use gentle scrub. And the person with oily skin should be using an exfoliation which prevents pimples dullness and breakouts and helps to control oiliness.11

 

Herbal Cosmetics for Various Types of Skin:4

1.     For Dry Skin Example of Herbs Rubia Cardifolia (Manjista), Triphla, Tulsi, Glycerihza glabra in sesame oil. Fruit face mask Banana or avocado pulp.

2.     For Sensitive Skin Example of Herbs Usheero, Curcuma longa, Triphala, Azadircta indica mustaka, Nimba in coconut oil. Fruit face mask Banana or pineapple pulp.

3.     For Oily Skin Example of Herbs Tulsi, Curcuma longa. Fruit face mask orange peel powder.

 

Benefits:

·       Body scrubs remove dead skin cells, and blackheads.

·       They allow your skin to absorb moisturizer better. By doing dead skin cell buildup, any moisturizer applied afterward will soak into the skin more thoroughly.

·       They open pores and prevent ingrown hairs.

·       They leave your skin smoother and more even.1

 

Difference between herbal and synthetic products:2

General Scrubbing Agents:

1.     Fenugreek:

 

Fenugreek is rich in nutrients such as folic acid, niacin, vitamins-A, C and K, B6, riboflavin, thiamin, magnesium, zinc, iron, potassium, copper, calcium, selenium, manganese, etc. This nutri tional combination of fenugreek helps in balancing your skin pH levels, fights free-radical damage, increases the natural radiance in your skin, and nourishes your skin excellently. Fenugreek has natural anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties that benefit your skin health extremely.

 

 

Fenugreek has powerful anti-bacterial qualities that help in controlling acne. The nutrient blends in fenugreek helps in regulating the sebum production in the skin. Thus, by preventing the overproduction of sebum, fenugreek reduces the chances of your skin developing acne.

 

2.     Coffee:

 

Antioxidant-rich coffee may actually slow down the aging process caused by DNA damage. Coffee contains the same antioxidant properties as berries, tea, chocolate and wine. Even better, antioxidants can also help slow the aging of sun-exposed skin.Coffee’s caffeine content and potent antioxidants give it powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

Caffeine and various compounds in coffee have a diuretic effect which works wonders on swollen tissues around the eyes when applied topically. It’s a natural way reduce the appearance of tired eyes by diminishing fluid retention.

 

3.     Turmeric:

 

Turmeric has been used as an antiseptic for centuries and is regarded as one of nature's most powerful healers. The root helps even out your skin tone, making it an excellent ingredient in a face scrub. Turmeric has strong anti- inflammatory properties, which help soothe your skin. Turmeric Face Scrub harnesses the power of Turmeric. Exfoliants to scrub away dirt , impurities, and dead skin cells, helping fade dark spots.

 

4.     Orange peel powder:

 

The antioxidants and vitamin C in orange peel powder make it an ideal ingredient in the facial scrub. Rich in Vitamin C, which is an anti-ageing ingredient that facilitates the formation of collagen and elastin - the two main fibers that support the skin structure.

 

5.     Multani mitti:

 

Multani mitti is able to soak up excess oil, dirt and sweat from the skin, so it can perform a complete clean-up job on the pores from the inside-out. This helps to prevent acne, pimples and blackheads, as pores are healthier in that case. Since it exfoliates the skin, it can fade pigmentation, dark spots and acne scars.

 

6.     Coconut oil:

 

sugar are good for exfoliating not only your face but also the rest of your body. However, if you have oily and acne- prone skin, avoid using coconut oil on your face. It can block your skin pores and aggravate your acne or cause breakouts. coconut oil was used as a remedy for treating illnesses and infection, healing wounds, promoting the growth of strong bones, and protecting skin against blemishes.

 

7.     Rose water:

 

Rose water is perfect for cleansing your skin and removing any impurities that could cause unwanted spots Because of its gentle nature, it is suitable for people with any skin type - even sensitive skin. Using rose water for face and body cleansing will ensure your skin doesn't become dry and irritated. Rose water is a fragrant liquid that is made by distilling rose petals in water. It is packed with powerful antioxidants, vitamins , and minerals that nourish and hydrate the skin. The sweet and soothing aroma of rose water is known to have a calming effect on the mind and body, making it a popular choice for aromatherapy as well .

 

8.     Honey:

 

Highly popular and used in cosmetic treatment honey used in preparing hair conditioner and face wash, etc. Honey is the only insect derived natural product which has therapeutic and cosmetic as well as nutritional values Honey has been used for both as food and in medicines since ancient times

 

A powerful humectant, it helps retain essential moisture while soothing dryness and itchiness. Honey is best for the face as it contains antibacterial and antiseptic abilities and may benefit oily and acne-prone skin. It's also a natural humectant, which keeps the skin moist always.

 

EVALUATION:

Evaluation parameter for facial scrub:

Appearance:

·       Colour: Yellowish brown colour of facial scrub was observed by visual examination

·       Odour: Odour found to be characteristics. Sweet and simple syrup like odour.

·       State: Semisolid state of scrub was observed.

·       Consistency: Consistency was found smooth with visual observation.

·       PH: PH of the prepared gel evaluated by using PH paper. Small quantity of scrub applied on PH paper. PH was found in the range of between 4-6.

 

Spreadability:

It is used to identify spread ability of the gel on the skin. Small quantity of sample placed on a glass slide then another slide placed above them.

 

Amount of weight placed on slide, then it spread on slide and how much time it taken for spread is measured. It calculated by using formula:

 

S = m × L/t

S= spreadability M= weight placed on slide (1gm) L= length of glass slide (7.5cm) T= time taken in seconds (22 sec) Spreadability was found to be 0.34gm.cm/sec

 

Irritability:

Small amount of gel applied on skin and kept for few minutes and found to be non- irritable.

 

Washability:

Small quantity of gel applied on the skin and wash with water after few minutes found to be washable with water.

 

Grittiness:

Exfoliants need to abrasive property so fenugreek seeds powdered and pass through sieve then this preparation has few gritty particles observed.

 

Foaming Index:

Add 1gm formulation in 5ml water in test tube, shake it for 5min. Allow it to stand for 15min. Observe the foam in cm. If the height of foam is less than 1cm, the foaming index is less than 100. If the height of foam is more than 1 cm then it is over 1000. Foaming index =1000/a Where, a = in ml in the test tube showing 1cm height.

 

CONCLUSION:

The above results suggest that the new scrub formulation is safe to use, and the coffee powder used to get excellent effects as a scrubbing agent. The majority of the substances are natural, and there are low chances of adverse effects. It is suitable for all skin types, including dry, oily, sensitive and normal. It produces best results and leaves the skin looking radiant and bright. A less amount of the mixture was applied to the dorsal area of the hand for some times and found to be edema, non-irritating, with no redness or other adverse effects.

 

The use of polyherbal face scrub gives effectiveness and healthier skin type. The antioxidant, antiseptic, anti-aging effect of fenugreek, turmeric and honey enhance the importance of use of polyherbal face scrub. The prepared facial scrub formulation was suitable to skin and was evaluated using various parameters. The formulation have passed all the tests included in the evaluation.
